As we end this year of learning at Beth El, I wanted to take some time to speak about one of my favorite texts, Pirkei Avot 6:3 “One who learns from his fellow one chapter, or one halakhah, or one verse, or one word, or even one letter, is obligated to treat him with honor.” Teachers know that just as our students learn from us, we learn from our students. And not just what we teach in the classroom. People learn from how we teach, what we teach, and even what we choose not to teach. This was a year of learning unlike any other, with a breadth of learning we might never have expected.

We learned from scientists and public health officials how to keep each other safe.

We learned from researchers and teachers how to teach effectively in a hybrid environment.

We learned from IT professionals, sound engineers, and entertainers how to run online programs.

We learned from musicians how to sing safely.

We learned from other clergy to keep in person services going.

We learned from parents and students what they needed to be able to learn.

We learned from congregants what they needed to feel part of the community.

We saw examples of how to act, and how not to act.

In short, we have all been each other’s teachers.

So as we close this year of learning, I want to say thank you to all of you and call you my teachers, as I have learned from each of you over this past year. Thank you for all that you have done, and I look forward to seeing you soon.
